Managing Gen-Xers and Millenials . . . sigh.


After reading this article, my response was to shake my head and sigh heavily. These aren’t the kind of folks whose work ethic we embrace at DigitalDay, but we do run into them continually:

My Partner, Shane Geisheimer, responded to this a little more eloquently:

While I don’t agree with many of the actions of my generation this article pretty much sums everything up.

Us Gen-xers watched as our fathers worked long careers for one company (my Dad worked at Cooper Tire in Findlay, Ohio for 32 years) only to watch everything start to crumble when people at the top of the company made bad decisions that triggered a downward spiral. The belief that your efforts are eventually rewarded becomes a little jaded when stock options and other things turn to meaningless pieces of paper.

We’ve seen this in the through the dot.com bust history of DigitalDay first hand.

I’m at the tail end of the Gen-xers so I have a little different point of view than our friends the Millenials since most of them didn’t start working until post 2001 when the world was in chaos. So all they’ve known is don’t entrust yourself to anybody because you’ll eventually be disappointed.

But, I won’t write them all off yet because, I think. as things move forward (especially in our company) those people will step up and become leaders down the road once they figure things out for themselves.

It’s a constant struggle in any company to keep morale up, success high and projects running like clockwork. But I think we can all take learnings away from things we’ve done in the last 1 year and things we’ve done in the last 10 years to build on. I can’t speak for my Baby Boomer co-workers because you were doing things before my time, but I feel that your own destiny eventually depends on your own individual efforts and how you treat others along the way. And sometimes that pays dividends and sometimes that barely results in a pat on the back. Sometimes it even results in a kick in the ass!!

But I think that a little appreciation and recognition does end up going a long way and we have to be mindful of that. To be purposeful in our efforts and tactful in how we approach things is always going to win the race, but enjoying those you work with and what you’re doing will almost always provide you with a more rewarding career.

The more we make an effort to make sure that our culture includes smart people, a good work effort and dare I say it even a fun atmosphere the better off we’re going to be.
