“It’s time, we’re going to refresh our identity”
The words that make every designer tremble a little in their boots – tackling design work for yourself. Whether it’s as part of an agency, a one person freelance shop, or in house department of a Fortune 500, taking on work for yourself is a challenge, but if you handle it right, it can also be an incredible opportunity.
It’s not that designers are scared, but everything feels strange when you’re the client. Processes and techniques that you approach clients with everyday are called into question, and you can easily get lost in endless second guessing. Is this showing us in the right light? Is this too simple? Too complex? Too trendy? Out of date? At larger shops, there can easily be too many chefs in the kitchen. Put a dozen designers, copywriters, developers, and ad people in a room together, and you’ll be lucky to ever get a consensus out of them.
DigitalDay has recently taken on just such a task. While not a total refresh, we’re looking at tightening up our identity and related materials, ensuring consistency and giving everything a fresh look to go along with our growth and changes.
Over the next couple weeks, I’ll be sharing each stage of the process as we tackle it, and hopefully take a look at some ideas to help others work on their own projects.
